Bridge in Literature

Calling those who are more avid readers than me (which will be most of you) smile

I am compiling instances supporting the view that EVERYBODY knew how to play bridge (not necessarily very well) in the first few decades after the creation of "Contract" bridge in its current form (November 1 1925)

Can anyone cite examples from books written (or describing events) around that time where bridge is mentioned when not a significant part of the story.

Non-fiction preferably although interested in any fiction where playing bridge is mentioned only in passing. I know many works by Somerset Maugham and Agatha Christie feature bridge but both those were keen bridge players in real life. Other less prominent ones (and therefore hard to spot and remember smile) would be interesting.
