Who is (or was) Dan Gifford after whom the national rubber bridge competition is named?

No one seems to be going to rply to you. What I know is not very much.

Dan Gifford was an Auckland bridge player, who was very keen on rubber bridge. he died in 1980 or 81. As you will know from the Club Manual, the NZCBA was given a bequest from his estate in 1983/84. I don't know how much. It would have been quite a bit less than the balance of $230,501 in the Gifford Fund, that was transferred to the NZ Bridge Foundation account on 30 March 2010.

If you want any more information try Auckland players, who were playing before 1980.
