Rating calculation
In 2020 my rating was 23 and I earned 7 B points and 62 C points. The ratings calculator shows that my new rating should be 26.02, or rounded up to 27. In fact my new rating is shown as 31, and my grading has been changed to Intermediate. Why?

from Alan Morris Dec 2020 "Alister shared a bulletin with all clubs earlier this week reiterating our plans for the end of year roll over. A change to open grade will be implemented whereby all players ranked at provincial Master and above will be graded Open. Opening rating points will not be depreciated by the usual 20% as part of the recalculation for the 2021 playing year"

Yup, there's no depreciation this year, so you keep 23 + 7.62 = 31 and therefore Intermediate. Congrats !

That is actually a disappointment for me. I have never taken part in a tournament, and was hoping to do so for the first time this year. I would have much preferred to start with a junior tournament. An intermediate tournament looks rather daunting, and there are not many of them scheduled in Top of the South. Is there any way I can play in a junior tournament now?

Sorry - you're no longer a junior but an Intermediate tournament will have all standards of ability including yours. TOTS do have restricted tournaments and you might feel more comfortable playing in one of those

TOPS were going to have their 1st restricted pairs in August last year; but the government said NO.
They will try again this year on Saturday 14 August at Marlborough. I expect the res[ponse will indicate whether there will be future ones in Top of the South.

Is it TOPS or TOTS ?

The region has recently changed it to TOPS. Unless you wish to use the full title - Top of the South.
