Entering a tournament
Just wondering if the tournament entry procedure could be made a bit more user-friendly?
Or maybe I'm not doing it right?
I was asked by two friends who aren't Internet-savvy to enter two tournaments for them
[a] Cambridge Intermediate
and
[b] Te Awamutu Christmas
(and, to add a slight terminological inexactitude, also)
[c] Waitomo Veterans
For [a] I went to the Cambridge website and couldn't enter there; was directed to NZB website
There I had to log in and enter a email address and a password
Then it defaulted to an entry for ME which I had to change
For [b] I couldn't do the same; had to go into the Te Awamutu website
For [c] I would need to go to a third website; Waikato.bays to enter that one
(and that one said, on the morning of the tournament there were 4 tables entered, actually there were 12).
Wouldn't it be nice if I could do all that on ONE log-in?
Or am I missing something?

Hi Nick
I think during this transition period it will be muddly. As more and more clubs realise the benefits of using the NZB system, we will start to just have one place to go. I appreciate you have to remove your name in the NZB system if you are entering for others, but for the majority of users, I think having your name prepopulate in that field is a big advantage, as usually, they are entering themselves in an event. The Waikato Bays has made the bold move to get all clubs using the NZB system for 2018, rather than having to duplicate everything on their site. I hope other Regions will do the same.
Once clubs realise what they can do on the NZB site, I am sure they will like it. You can add relevant details about the event and if you want to, tick those who have paid. There is also a spreadsheet download available for all the entries

Three months on it doesn't seem to have become any easier!
Or, more likely, I am doing it all wrong
Can you please provide instructions on how to enter a tournament, using terminology a bear of very little brain can understand, preferably on the NZB website (which gets looked at more than this forum).
I have tried to enter the Kelly Peirse Memorial using all three options as in my original post but have drawn a blank every time
Some help would be appreciated
thanks

It is CLUBS that determine how you can enter a tournament, not NZB. Tournaments can only be entered via the NZB website if the club concerned has turned on the entry facility. You will know this because you will see the "ENTER HERE" button. If you can't see this button, you will have to enter the old-fashioned way by emailing the club, unless they have their own entry facility on their own website.
Waikato Bays Regional Committee no longer provides entry facilities for tournaments. So far only a few clubs have started using the NZB entry facility, but I'm sure it will become more popular with time.
In the meantime, you will have to email the Rotorua club directly with your entry for the Kelly Peirse teams.
Hope this helps.

Yes Rona has explained this well. It is hoped over time more and more clubs will use the NZB entry facility. The idea is to have a "one stop shop" for tournament entries, rather than having to find out where to enter a tournament. The Waikato Bays is leading by example, by asking all their clubs to use the NZB tournament entry method. The list of tournaments is already loaded on the NZB site, so it is simply using that list to take entries and resulting in less duplication and errors.
The great thing about using the NZB system is that when you then go into your "MyNZB" page, you will see all the events you have entered in one place.

I am with Nick, the current system is way too confusing.
I have missed out on tournaments in the past because I have used the wrong entry method. For example, emailing a club when I should have entered via the Waikato website.
There is one thing that seems to be missing from the NZB site and randomly supported by other entry methods.
That is the ability to message the organisers about special requirements.
When I am able to communicate my needs, I never have a problem but if I enter an event via a facility that does not allow me to request seating rights for a pairs movement, I can face big problems. I will always ask but then it can turn out that my request has gone to an email address that is not monitored with respect to the tournament.
That sucks, I have in the past been close to turning round and telling my partner that we have to drive back to Auckland because I cannot accept a moving seating assignment when the organisers have not spotted my email to the club tournament secretary.

Hi John
We have put in a request to the programmers to have some free text for messages to the organisors, so hopefully, that will be done soon. We have other priorities at the moment, so watch this space.
I am hopeful more and more clubs will use the NZB entry facility, so there are less places for players to have to go to and make it easier for everyone.
If you have made every attempt to inform organisors of your request, then I think it is very mean for them to not accommodate you. Even if you forgot to, I still think they should do their best to assist. As an organisor of many tournaments, I know it is annoying sometimes you do not know of seating requests, but we would never not accommodate them.

The NZB website says
If you have any special requests regarding this entry please contact the venue directly.
The Rotorua website says
Please ensure when cancelling or changing entries to contact Waikato Bays directly, as a message left with the tournament secretary may not reach them in time.
Go figure

Hi Nick
I will contact Rotorua about this. They have only just sorted out their club admin and probably not aware of the conflicting information.
By the way, I have written a dowcument to help people understand the entry process. Click here to read about it.

How can I put someone else's email as a contact when entering a tournament?
If entering on behalf of a different pair
or if I want my partner to get the confirmation - GILES HANCOCK02 Apr 2018 at 04:13PM
Hi Nick
Your partner should get an email confirmation if you enter both of you. BUT only if they are registered for the NZB website.
I suggest you encourage all your partners and friends to register. And enter themselves rather than ask you. It's not hard.
cheers, Giles

Giles has given the correct answer. Also, if you are an Admin person for your club, you can add entries for other pairs in the Admin screen under the "Entries" tab. This is far better than entering them via the "Enter Here" icon in the Tournament schedule.
Certainly agree with Giles to encourage players to register on the website and do their own entries, as it is better for everyone to manage from there

I'm still having a problem with what appears to be a random occurrence of three different outcomes when I try to enter a tournement
[1] It all works Ok
[2] The name(s) menu appears after typing in the number but disappears never to come back again before there is time to click on it
[3] The names menu never appears
Judging by the number of entries seen with only one name it appears the problem is widespread
Some help would be appreciated

Hi there
You can enter multiple events on the NZB website, so long as the club concerned is using the NZB entry system. I see the Te Awamutu Christmas is set up to accept entries in the Tournament page, so not sure why this is an issue. In the Tournament page, just search the club and you will see it there. The Waitomo one is a different story. Seems they are not using this system, so not sure how they are taking entries.
I agree it would be nice to have all entries available through one portal and this is the dream of NZB, but it is up to the clubs to use it. More and more and seeing the value and are coming on board, but like a nice cheese, good things take time ! We are more than happy to help clubs learn more about it. It is very easy to set up.
Re having to remove your name when entering for others, I know that is an extra step, but 90% of the time, those entering via this process, are entering for themselves and others, so I am sure they would prefer their name to automatically pop into that field.
Hope this helps

Why do all the links to "How to enter a tournament", including the one in this thread, instead lead to "All news"?

I have no problems in entering on line; but I am aware that I have lots of practice as an administrator, and that many players have difficulties. Some Marlborough players don't even try, and just ask me to enter for them. I have tried to show some how to enter online; but sometimes wonder if I'm getting anywhere.
All players should register on the NZB website, as them they will know they are entered when they get their email.
Clubs should put the email address that they use monitor requests onto the tornament notice, and on the online entry site. Also of course players should use this address. I ask players to send there requests direct to me; but I know I have to check the club'c email, as some players don't take notice of my request.

How does one withdraw an entry after the closing or full date?
Access to edit appears blocked from that point - ROBIN YOUNG22 Mar 2021 at 08:49PM
Nick
Contact theclub that is running the event you want to cancel from; and be sure to use the email or phone number entrants hav ebeen asled tp use.
This is reasonable, as once entries have closed the administartor has no need to check entries. I will not be very happy if a pair wishes to camcell this coming weekend, and just doesn't turn upwithout letting me know.

What about setting up a "How to Enter a Tournament" document which answers the questions posed on this thread and elsewhere?
