Great Kiwi Week "in" Sydney
We can report yet another Kiwi success in last weeks’ “Real Bridge” Sydney Spring Nationals. The team of Steph and Tom Jacob and Susan and Denis Humphries won the 8 round 2-day Mixed Teams.
This follows on the success of Nick Jacob, GeO Tislevoll and Geeske Joel in the Open Teams, James Coutts-Liam Milne in the Open Pairs and Jeremy Fraser Hoskin- Paul Carson in the Butler Swiss Pairs. Susan, James and Liam are all Australian based but we can still claim them as our own.
Humphries hit the lead as early as Round 2 but hit a big bump in Round 4 in the form of a big loss to Ashton.

However, that was their only loss in a very consistent performance which saw them fractionally in 2nd place with one round to go. They played local opposition in Jo and Sam Simpson and Jenny Millington – Barry Jones in the last round with 12.31 vps giving Humphries an almost comfortable victory by 6.26 vps.
This board in the last match was important.

When Jenny did not open in first seat, her partnership were not able to get back into the auction. Denis Humphries struggled in his modest contract and finished two down, -200. However, Tom Jacob did open as West..and left the rest to Steph:

Sam Simpson’s lead was a diamond to Steph’s king. Steph attacked clubs by playing low to the king and Jo Simpson’s ace. Back came another diamond. Steph then made an important guess. She led a low club from dummy, inserting 9 from her own hand.
Sam exited the third round of diamonds, though was not going to enjoy cashing the other two as it was Jo who had the A. Steph had the carefully preserved 7 as an entry to the long heart and she had 3 tricks in each red suit, 2 clubs and A for 9 tricks and 5 hard-earned imps.
It has been a great 4-day weekend for Tom Jacob. We will read about the other 2-day success tomorrow.
