Looking Back at the Babich Wines New Zealand Wide Pairs
Ruth and Trish Top the Field.
The Rotorua pair, Ruth Lewis and Trish Stephens had a wonderful evening on the 1st November when they topped the field in this year’s Babich Wines New Zealand Wide Pairs with a huge 75.67%, over 6% clear of second placed Sulochna and Bill Humphrey. Of the 24 boards, they had only 2 scores below 50% with all bar 3 being 60% or higher, a lot higher in many cases. Here then are the top 10 nationwide:

Of the top 10, five sat North-South including the top 2 and 5 East-West. 5 clubs ran Howells with the top score in a Howell coming from Colleen Freitas and Stuart Oliver with 64.42% at Greymouth.
Overall, the total of 57 competing clubs was two up on 2018 though 4 short of the record 61 last achieved in 2013.However, the overall total of 1012 competing pairs was the second highest in the event’s 21 year history. There were 1018 in 2017.
With $10 to come to New Zealand Bridge Foundation per player, we expect to see $17,000 plus (that is, after expenses) made available to support Youth Bridge in New Zealand.
Thanks to all clubs no matter how few or many tables your club had. The largest heats were in the Wellington Region with 21 tables at the Wellington Club and 16.5 at Upper Hutt. Nelson had 14 tables, Rangiora 13 and the following either 12 or 12.5: Matamata, Mt Albert, Taieri, Taradale and Warkworth.
Many thanks
Many people made the event happen, from the X Club team of scorers, Bob Fearn, Jan Spaans, Michael Neels and Anna Kalma who completed their task by midday Saturday, to the 57 competing clubs and all those at clubs who assisted with dealing boards, scored, directed, prepared refreshments, organized movements etc… thanks to you all…and not forgetting New Zealand Bridge Foundation and New Zealand Bridge for allowing the event to happen and to Andy Braithwaite, my booklet analysis checker.
