Senior and Youth Eligibility for 2019 (Corrected)
The following confirms the age definitions for Seniors and for Youth Events in and involving New Zealand for 2019 and until further notice.
New Zealand is adopting WBF definitions which are set out below.
In respect of Youth, there will be one exception, the National Youth Teams held in Hamilton on the day before the National Bridge Congress (2019 - September 27th) which is open to anyone under the age of 30 as at 31st December 2018 (born on or after 31st December 1989).
In respect of Seniors, the age eligibility will apply to Inter-Provincials and Senior events at the National Congress as well as for New Zealand representation in Senior events.
Eligibility for Senior Events
NZ Bridge will adopt the World Bridge Federation eligibility criteria for participating in Senior Events from 2019.
Players will be eligible to play in senior events in 2019 if they are aged at least 60 on the 1st January 2019. Their birthday must be on or before the 31st December 1958.
The age of eligibility will increase by 1 year of age every 2nd year.

WBF Regulation Senior Players In order to participate in WBF Senior Championships and events, players must reach the age of 65** during the calendar year of the event in question. But see the timescale below for the implementation of this revised regulation: ** 19 August 2017 : The WBF Executive Council decided to raise the age requirement for Senior players to 65 over the next 8 years in accordance with the following schedule: Thus from 1st January 2018, a Senior player must be aged 61 in the year of the Championship in which he is going to play On 1st January 2020 this will be raised to 62 years of age On 1st January 2022 it will be raised to 63 years of age On 1st January 2024 it will be raised to 64 years of age On 1st January 2026 it will be raised to 65 years of age |
YOUTH ELIGIBILITY
NZ Bridge has adopted the World Bridge Federation eligibility criteria for participating in Youth Events.
Players are eligible to play in Youth events in 2019 if they are aged 24 or less on the 1st January. Their birthday must be on or after the 1st January 1994.

WBF Regulation Youth Players The regulation regarding the age of players in Youth events was definitively adopted in San Paolo 2009 and confirmed in Philadelphia 2010 by the Executive Council, and has been in force since January 1st 2011. As stated in section 4.2 of the Eligibility Code, “players competing in Junior and Girls events must not have achieved their 25th birthday by 31st December of the year prior to the year in which the competition is to take place. In the case of special events (e.g. for younger players or University events) the Supplementary Conditions of Contest shall detail the age requirements. Players competing in Youngster events must not have achieved their 20th birthday by 31st December of the year prior to the year in which the competition is to take place. Players in the Kids events must not have achieved their 15th birthday by 31st December of the year prior to the year in which the competition is to take place.” |
