Central Districts' News with George MacLachlan

This is Libby who came to lessons in New Plymouth last year when she was 12 with her mum and grandfather. She has played most C grade nights since graduation. Her mum is the C grade convenor and Libby helps out by doing the announcements before play.

This year the club had 25 at lessons. Four have family already playing at the club. One comment last night was “I’m persevering with this for my sister’s sake!”

"Return to Bridge" at New Plymouth

Recently a new initiative got underway at the Wednesday daytime handicapped session. “Return to Bridge”. This attracted 4 new players three of whom are new to the club. A short lesson/discussion was held before an assisted play session. The returnees are partnered by experienced players who assist where needed. This is a weekly event for  6 weeks, after which it will be assessed and reviewed. Yesterday 6 regular members sat in on the lesson (a review of the 1NT bid and responses) and found it so useful they will attend each week in future.  Great work, New Plymouth!

The Wanganui Bridge Club was formed in 1940. It took 71 years before a Grand Master was annointed and that honour went to the lady who has now become the club's Patron, Ann Buckley. Ann is very well known in the Central Districts region, having played in almost all of the 18 clubs. She has been a fine mentor to many players in the Wanganui area and it is a fitting reward for her many years of devotion to the game.

 Four wins in succession
To actually win a tournament now and then is a pleasant experience.  To win four in succession is an amazing achievement. Anshu Prasad began her astonishing run with wins at Marton, Waipukurau, Kapi-Mana and Levin .. the first of these with George MacLachlan and the following three with Steve Baron. The Waipukurau Open win was an especially good effort because Anshu is still graded as Intermediate. The consistent form of Anshu and Steve has continued during the Wanganui Championship Pairs in which they hold a handy lead with just two nights to go.

The Taihape club held their Intermediate/Junior tournament recently and the winners were the local pair of Janene Oates and Frances Loader who just headed the Levin pair of Cath Cooper and Roger Calderwood. In 2017 the placings were reversed .. so very consistent bridge from both pairs. Although there were only 9 tables, the region was nicely balanced with pairs from Wanganui, Levin, Hokowhitu, Feilding and Palmerston North joining the 8 Taihape pairs.
