Calling Bridge playing Teachers
New Zealand Bridge is trying to take Bridge into schools. We know that traditionally our game has been played mainly by older people.
There are reasons why school age students would take to our game. Some will become “addicted” straightaway. Others may take periods away from the game because of work, family or just other commitments. Some of these will return to Bridge later in life…or they are more likely to take up the game later if they have learnt the basics at a younger age.
School age students pick up the game much quicker than those who learn at an older age.
School Bridge can be played in unusual environments, like the library at Bucklands Beach Intermediate. There is usually plenty of discussion, quite a lot of laughter too, as at Auckland Grammar though it is more serious when inter-school tournaments are played.
We can demonstrate the learning advantages for students of learning and playing Bridge:
Counting…problem solving…working together.
and for many young players, the game is fun…especially if they have friends who play.
Taking Bridge to schools is something that can be done by those not involved in schools but it is much easier with the help of a teacher, a school administrator, someone involved with a school. We mean Secondary, Intermediate, even Primary Schools…private, public…large or small….country or city.
Can you help?
We would love to hear if Bridge is being taught and played at any school in this country.
We are aware of the activities at Macleans College and Bucklands Beach Intermediate Schools in East Auckland and also at two other Auckland schools, Auckland Boys Grammar and Remuera Intermediate.
Are there currently any other schools currently playing the game?
Are you a teacher or have some other role at a school and could devote perhaps a lunchtime a week to the teaching of Bridge?
If you do, or have any comments to make about the above, please contact me, Richard Solomon, on Richard.solomon@nzbridge.co.nz
Or by phone on 09 232 8494.
Seeing young players learn and enjoy the game is so rewarding.
