Lots of Learners in Kerikeri
Sue Brown reports that Kerikeri has done a big advertising campaign this year for its beginners classes and is delighted with 20 new people learning bridge plus four returnees! This is the most this club has ever had in one year and the club is looking forward to welcoming lots of new members once the lessons are complete. One of the strategies used was the NZ Bridge cinema advertising. We are unsure if any of our new learners came as a result of this but it certainly added to the complete package.
Whangarei were pleased to host The Barrells 100% Open Teams in March. This was a fiercely contested event with quite a few Auckland teams driving up for the occasion. One board worth a mention was in Match 4 when things were starting to settle and the top teams were all but sorted. This one was thrown in to the mix.

Against us the bidding got complicated and stopped in 6. North discovered the Q was missing and found the six level was a nice safe place to play. Those of us with a far less complex bidding system bid 7. The spades dropped 2 -2 , making 7 cold, along with 7 NT. This resulted in huge swings as North- South were vulnerable and upset what was turning out to being a far from average competition.

Meanwhile, Sulochna and Bill Humphrey averaged nearly 63.5% to win the recent Paihia Twin Salvers Pairs event. Beverly Jepson and Roger Toplis started off very well with 66.07% in the first session but slipped to third behind Margaret Hooson and Richard Bland.
While many Auckland players have been travelling to Whangarei, a few of our Whangarei players have been travelling to Auckland. We had great success in the Auckland Easter Congress with one of our members, Andrew Liu, winning the 10 A Open Pairs on the Saturday and making the Teams final on Sunday/Monday where his team finished a very creditable third in the 10 team final.
Recently, the Towai Challange was played for between Whangarei and Kerikeri. Two teams of each grade play for each club and the scores are all added. There can only be one winner and this year it was Kerikeri.
As I said short and sweet. Good bridging everyone.
