Volunteer of The Month

            Derek Rankin - Taupo

Several years ago the committee of this club decided to take on electronic scoring. Derek agreed to have a look at what was on offer and in his report recommended Scorer with the distinctive red table units.

On approval from the committee he organised the very successful introduction of the system, ensured that members were taught how to use the units and has always been available on the end of a phone call to rectify any problems from the less technically-proficient directors. On his own initiative Derek has regularly maintained and updated the system, updated the computer, introduced a TV screen for results etc. More recently, he has replaced the red table units with tablets, again very successfully. Thanks to Derek, Taupo has very few scoring problems. On top of that he has updated the club website and constantly checks to see that all systems are 100% functional.

Rona Driscoll quantifies that last statement. "Actually, updating our website is a completely inadequate description of what he did. When we needed a new website, he investigated options, completely rewrote the website, including all the content, and regularly updates it."

Derek, a retired teacher, and his wife, Frances, play regularly at the club. Frances is one of the few Foundation Members (from back in 1970) who still plays. So many players have their own special skills to offer their clubs. The Taupo Club is very fortunate and appreciative of the time and expertise Derek has given in the areas of computer scoring programmmes and club website. Derek is thus a very worthy recipient of the Volunteer of the Month award for March.
