Our Youth Prepare for Canberra

Tracey Lewis is the co-opted representative on the NZ Bridge International Sub-Committee with special responsibilities in respect of international and potential international Youth players. A Youth squad of eight players has been selected and will take part in Youth Week and play a test match against an Australian Youth Team in Canberra in January 2017.

Tracey organised a very successful workshop in Auckland over the weekend 17th -18th December to help prepare the Youth Squad for Canberra in January. One member of the squad, Dunedin's Nik Mitchell was unable to attend as he was graduating that week-end from Otago University.

The seven squad members who were there were:

Andi Boughey               (Auckland)

Matthew Brown              (Auckland)

Feitong Chen                (Auckland)

Jeremy Fraser-Hoskin   (Auckland)

Matt Hughes                 (Palmerston North)

Brad Johnston              (Dunedin)

Jacob Kalma                (Auckland)

Tracey would like to thank the following for their support regarding the week-end:

"My sincere thanks to the speakers who gave up time in their weekend, which leading up to Christmas is pretty full on; Tom Jacob, Michael Ware, Michael Whibley, Steph Jacob, Michael Cornell and Nick Jacob.

Thanks also to Patrick Carter and Tony Morcom for preparing the boards.

NZ Bridge for supplying their smart new squad shirts.

The NZ Bridge Foundation for covering Brad Johnston's and Matt Hughes’ airfares, for paying for the lunchtime pizza’s and covering the costs of small gifts of appreciation to the speakers.

Next year the plan is to run two workshops with the focus being on mentoring the developing squad players.

Good luck, team. You are a delightful group to assist and support!"

Watch out for their performance in Canberra.
