ANOTHER GREAT KIWI RESULT IN POLAND

CORNELL - BACH Finish 2nd in Open Pairs

The Open, Womens, Seniors and Mixed Pairs ran alongside the latter stages of the Teams competitions.

Some of the New Zealand Pairs took part. In the Seniors' Pairs, Trevor Robb- Andrew Janisz and Chris Ackerley-Douglas Russell were eliminated in the Semi Final stage with overall % of 48.92 and 48.70 respectively in their 45 pair field.

In the Women's competition, Susan Humphries - Steph Jacob qualified for the 18 pair final in 10th place in their group with a 52.77% average and in the final were 15th with 46.26%

Open Pairs

A number of Kiwi pairs took part but only 2 made it into the final:

21  Matthew Brown - Michael Whibley                 52.87

27  Ashley Bach - Michael Cornell                       52.13

out of 99 pairs.

In the final (52 pairs ), Matthew and Michael finished a very respectible 27th with 49.93%. However, Ashley and Michael got better and better as the event progressed. With 10 boards left, they had moved up to 2nd place with 55.50% average and only the Germans, Sabine Auken- Roy Welland ahead of them on 56.43%.

In those last 10 boards, Ashley and Michael scored a huge 75.40%. Enough to win? Normally, yes. However, Auken- Welland scored 67.40% themselves, just enough to keep them in front:

Sabine Auken - Roy Welland                     57.52

Ashley Bach - Michael Cornell                   57.45

Some of you may have read Sabine Auken's "I Love This Game". With a sigh of relief, those might be her words after the final session. A great result, nevertheless, for Ashley and Michael.

Tomorrow we will bring you the final Teams results and news of a few overseas players in Poland familiar to some Kiwis.
