Central Districts' News with George MacLachlan

Winners of the Wanganui Open held in mid-July were Bob Hurley and Pam Livingston though the highest score of the day (67.11%) came from the familiar faces of Ken Bateman and Noel Woodhall (pictured above). Meanwhile, Patrick D'Arcy and Graeme Norman travelled up from Wellington to play in the Levin Open and turned in remarkably consistent scores to lead a strong field.

Going to the Canberra Festival of Bridge next January?

Central Districts’ players have pricked up their ears over the announcement by Singapore Airlines that from September 1st they will be providing a direct service from Wellington to Canberra. This will be of real interest to Wellington and Top of the South players as well because it means a simple flight to the popular Canberra Congress held each January.

"Golden" Lorraine

Congratulations to Lorraine Stachurski who is now a Gold Grand Master.   For the record, a Gold GM is attained when your "A" and your  "B" points total 4,000 with the "A" points being at least 2,500.  The Palmerston North club is well represented in the exclusive club of Gold Grand Masters because Lorraine now joins the ranks of Evelyn and Bob Hurley and Wayne Burrows.   As a matter of fact these four are the only Gold GM's in the whole of the Central Districts region. (At my rate of progress, I could qualify about the time I turn 175...!)

80%

Dorothy Mackay with an "80%" smile.

It's always nice to return a 70% score. Makes one feel good. Dorothy MacKay felt really good recently when she came up with precisely 80.00% at a recent club night at Levin. Well done Dorothy..! ...A reward for all the hard work you've put in over many years .. Committee member, Past President, Tutor, and now a Life Member.  Are there any other 80%-ers around?

The Hokowhitu club has held a Daffodil Day tournament every August for about twenty years and always attracts a good response for the Cancer Society.  A special trophy was introduced in 1996 and bears some impressive names amongst the engravings. One of those is for Ken Bateman, who will have a second entry after winning the 2016 tournament with Jan Whyte.

They are pictured here holding the distinctive trophy. For Jan it was a pleasing "send off" because the very next day she flew to New York to attend the wedding of her niece.

Parent-child partnerships are not uncommon but it's always nice to see. Congratulations to Judy Johnson and George Masters on winning the recent Taradale Open.

The Wanganui club is about to purchase electronic scoring pads.  At a special meeting held recently the vote was 2 to 1 in favour.
