Volunteer of The Month
Janice Jones, Orewa
This feature started in June with the award to Rona Driscoll, who is known nationally as well for the huge amount of time given to her own club. As we stated, a volunteer can help a club in many ways and to be our “Volunteer of the Month” need not be of national prominence.
That is the case with this month’s award where the award is being made to a club member of the Orewa Bridge Club who stepped in to help in a moment of crisis in an area of now critical importance to so many of our clubs, the internet. The nomination comes from the club committee and would surely be endorsed by a large number of the club members.
All clubs have a dedicated few who give much time in keeping their clubs running and, to these, we owe our thanks. Occasionally, one individual can make a particular contribution to a club and one such is Orewa’s Janice Jones. In April 2016, the company hosting the web site used by Orewa and a number of other clubs suddenly removed without warning the hosting software within which clubs displayed their results and other information.
Imagine the responses we received, “Where are our results? Where has the web site gone?” Contacting the company, we were told that it would be restored and that we had one month before it would be finally withdrawn.
Fortunately, Orewa had a member who was an expert web designer. She set to and within about one week, we had our own web site up and running with a far better domain name. How long would it have taken and what cost would we have incurred had we gone to a web design company? In the following few weeks, it was improved and now resembles our old site and will be further enhanced as time goes by. The same uncluttered look and ease of use has been retained which simplifies its use. Too many sites are spoiled by too much information on a screen and with unwanted pictures which impart a cluttered appearance. Orewa owes a debt of gratitude to Janice Jones for beavering away to provide Orewa with a replacement web site in such a short period.

Janice joined Orewa Bridge Club in 2010 when she was over here on holiday from the UK and continued to play whenever she visited these shores. She finally realised that New Zealand was the place to live and moved here permanently last year to become a regular player. She is also making a positive contribution on our committee.”
Thanks to the Orewa Club for nominating Janice. She is one of so many who give, either on a regular basis or when a crisis arises. This feature is just a small way of saying “thank you”.
