Junior/Intermediate Teams winners at the Hawke's Bay Congress, Susan Brown, Karen Eriksen, Jolene Zink and Judith Lucas
There’s only one place to begin, at this year’s, the 24th, Hawke’s Bay Congress. It was held as usual over Queens’ Birthday Week-end but at a new venue, the newly opened East Pier Hotel in historic Ahuriri. It provided a really pleasant outlook for players, made even better by the really fine weather.
All grades of player was catered for, from Novice through to Open.
Firstly, congratulations to Palmerston North's Lorraine Stachurski, who became the country's latest Gold Grand Master at this Congress. Lorraine is not only a top director but also a fine tournament player too.
As usual, the Week-End started with the Welcome Pairs, with 20 tables in play. Robert Poulgrain and Peter Ramsey won N/S with Eileen Gray and Pat Knight first E/W.
The Match Point Swiss Pairs, a new approach to traditional Pairs, attracted 94 pairs and was won by Wellington’s Kate Davies and John Patterson. Meanwhile, Mark O’Dowd and Chris Hagen had a big win in the Intermediate/Junior Pairs with session scores of 61 and 67%.
Above are the winners of the Junior/ Intermediate Teams who won despite winning one much fewer than the second and third placed teams. There was a field of 12 teams.
46 teams contested the Open Teams, 7 rounds of 10 boards’ Swiss after which the top 6 contested the final and the next 6 the Plate. Space limitations meant that the finals took place in the Crown Hotel, a short distance from the East Pier Hotel. Sole, Bristow, Ramsey, Hurley, Hacking and Rigler contested the final with Matthew and Mairi Bristow and George Masters and Russell Wilson coming out on top. Plate winners were Lenart (Tony Lenart- Alister Stuck, Lorraine Stachurski – Mindy Wu) who won all five of their matches.
Finally, it was great to see a section of Novice Pairs taking part. The top pair were Sandy and Bob Maidens.

AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM...
Up in Gisborne, the host club had three of its members in their 90’s playing in the Gisborne Open Pairs on April 30th. Each was presented with a beautifully dressed bottle of wine, with all three looking mighty pleased with themselves.
Over 90 and very active are : Adele Waters, Nola Mckee and Annette Tyerman.
The event was won by George Masters and John Pitts.
Congratulations to the successful players in the recent Inter-Provincial trials, held in Palmerston North.

Other recent winners included Helen Kelly - Irene Taunt at the Feilding Intermediate Pairs, Jack James - Sally Mannering at the Palmerston North Junior Pairs, Jan Henderson, Ruth Spittle, Ash Fitchett and Jo Hayes at Taradale's Tierney Teams and Cindy and Graeme Gibbs at Taihape's Intermediate Pairs.
Meanwhile, it was "family day" at Hawera's Charity Pairs where Effie Gallie, a stalwart of so many successes at Hawera won with her brother Malcom Mcdonald (pictured below) with a near 63% average.
