Bon Jour Mesdames and Messieurs
Peninsula Akaroa held its annual 8B tournament on Saturday 9th May with a healthy 20 tables of players present, including players from faraway Wellington and Timaru. A group of six ladies from the Wellington club made a weekend of it in this picturesque town. The event returned, after an absence of three years, during restoration, to the Gaiety Hall. Fittingly, the hi-light of the event had to be, in lieu of the standard joke by the winners, a rendition of the Vera Lynn hit, “Wish Me Luck” by sisters doing it for themselves, Naomi Hannah-Brown and Priscilla Bloy. Michael Buck and June Jung, and Peter and Elena Udy were second and third respectively and the above were also winners of the Whales, Dolphins and Penguins sections.

Inter Provincial Trials
18 pairs contested the Open/ Women/Seniors trials on the weekend of 14th and 15th May at the Christchurch club rooms. A small field contested the Intermediate positions on offer. When the bidding was over and the cards played our representative team is Tim Schumacher, Jan Alabaster, Max Morrison and Neal Phillips in the Open with Daniel and David Skipper the reserves. Les Frater, Dave Mikaera, Michael Johnstone and Paula Gregory (Timaru) make up the Seniors with Malcolm Fry and Mehboob Chiba the reserves. Our women players are represented by Mary Buckland and Trish Downward (Ashburton) and Sarah Garland and Pavla Fenwick with Jane Lennon and Margaret Burgess the reserves. The Intermediate team is Catherine Fitchett, Judy Giles, Marilyn Watson and Ewan Chapman. Tim and Jan were the stand-out pair in the combined field heading off the field by 26 vps. The director complimented the trialists on the spirit in which they played and the discipline they applied in minimising breaches of the laws. They were a pleasure to direct.
National Rubber Bridge Tournament: A Congress Incentive.
We have a good number of Rubber entries, 20 pairs, and they are battling it out for our place in the national finals.
The Intermediate and Junior League is going well and this year the Canterbury Regional Committee is sponsoring a Junior/Intermediate pair who has never been to the National Congress in Hamilton to head north.
Paula and Michael star at Rangiora
Timaru’s Paula Gregory and Michael Johnstone had a wonderful time at Rangiora’s 5A Pairs. They started with a cool 71.14% in the first session and averaged 63% in the three session event.
Rangiora Remembers
Anzac Day saw Rangiora hold its Holiday Open event and the 25th board held playing cards commemorating the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli. The New Zealand flag was hung in the centre of the room and the ode and last post played at the tea-break when all present stood in respect.
