Find out who has been doing well in recent Canterbury events.
Daylight saving ends on Sunday 3rd April and so summer’s over and winter’s on the way; so too does the tournament circuit get into gear. Already, Timaru has held its annual 10A two day tournament, which as usual was well organised and supported. Open Pairs’ winners were Arleen Schwartz and Murat Genc from Paul Freeland and Margaret Perley. Intermediate success was had by Marilyn Copland and Euan Chapman from Peter Simpson and Junelle Edmonds; best Juniors were Julia Knoef and Amber Newton (Christchurch). In the Intermediate Teams, victory went to Wendy Taggart, Grant Patterson, Rona Brownlie and Bev Turton.
One of the most important aspects of getting more players into our clubs is the integration stage from Beginners Lessons into the clubs...and keeping them! They have to enjoy themselves. It looks like that was happening when those who learnt last year at Geraldine had a very social and relaxed integration into their club. Bridge is fun. You just have got to believe it! (thanks to Helen Rinaldi and Fiona Temple for the photo.)
The Easter regional 10A event was held at the Christchurch Club. Intermediate Pairs winners were John Hamilton and Maureen Bond (Christchurch) from Judith Calder and Lynda Cameron (Rangiora). Best Juniors were Sam Gurney and Margaret Fraser (Crockfords). Open Pairs’ champions were Adrian Abraham and Neal Phillips (Nelson/Christchurch) from Kay Nicholas and Lesley Andrew (Timaru). The Open Teams was won by Christchurch’s Pavla Fenwick, Max Morrison, Neil Hawkins and Richard Lapthorne who did very well to beat the strong international quartet of Jenny Wilkinson-Shirley Newton and Jan Alabaster- Jan Cormack into second place. In the Intermediate competition, the team of Stuart Grant- Pam Whitehead, Tony Eldon- Charmain Hanbury Webber had a field day winning all six matches and being over 20vps clear of second place. Nick Mein- Brian Morgan won the Novice Pairs with an excellent 69.4% session score.
The Canterbury region has over 1500 affiliated players and the numbers at Christchurch represented less than 10% of those who could play. (34 pairs in the Open Pairs, 19 pairs in the Intermediate Pairs, 22 Open and 6 Intermediate Teams. That's not too bad a number.)Do we need to promote tournaments more than through a flyer and weekly notices, especially at club lower grades who might find the language of A and B points, club and tournament rankings, STOP cards and system cards, and teams scoring curious and confusing?
It’s AGM season too, and Christchurch’s new president is Theo Smits. Congratulations Theo.Support your committees – you voted for them.
Point to ponder – why are Open grade teams’ players oblivious to the mess they create in a day?
