RICHARD'S THOUGHTS

This is the first of a monthly series when "the floor is mine".

THE WAY WE WERE: THE WAY WE WILL BERichard Solomon

This may just go on to the New Zealand Bridge website to the “converted” though hopefully also it will be seen by others more used to reading newspapers and other publications in print. My first task is to introduce myself in my new role as the emagazine of which I was Editor has been replaced by a series of news items on the front page of the revitalised New Zealand Bridge website.

My new role is to present these items as follows:

  • To bring the latest bridge news far quicker than has been the case in the past. The news may consist of a tournament report, news of players, news from The Board or from regions or clubs.
  • To highlight upcoming tournaments or other bridge events.
  • To show that bridge is a humorous activity. We must be able to laugh at ourselves.
  • To stimulate debate on aspects of bridge, whether it is in bidding, play and defence, maybe about bridge teaching or directing or more controversial aspects of our bridge world.
  • To educate in showing how hands should be bid, played or defended.
  • To show how our top players handle awkward problems at the bridge table.
  • To provide articles of interest to newer players, whether they are at Intermediate stage or even less experienced.
  • To highlight achievement.

Some but not all of the above are already in place. Bridge, like our broader society, is constantly evolving, at a seemingly very rapid pace. 5 years ago appears now to be regarded as ancient history.

The internet and the ways we can view it are truly amazing, at times frustrating too. The opportunities just seem huge. People can be shaken out of their comfort zone, the way they like to do or view things. Some adapt immediately. For others, change takes longer.

Thus, I hope all our players will take advantage of what the new website has to offer, not just in respect of the items mentioned above but in relation to our clubs, tournaments future and past, master-points, forums etc.

You can access and read on-line, on your computer, phone or pad, or print off bridge articles if you prefer. We still want bridge read where and when you want to read it and reading off a machine may suit and be convenient.

Very few bridge players do not have access to either computers or other devices mentioned above. Take advantage of the new website. See what it can offer you. It’s not perfect. Give us constructive feedback to make it better. We want to capture the interest and enthusiasm of those interested in bridge, or who might be. Look and hopefully enjoy.
