A Great Contribution

Mary Wood, fund-raiser extraordinaire.

Hospice day at Howick Bridge Club.

This is the story of an incredible fund-raising effort from one of our bridge clubs.

Howick Bridge Club commenced having an annual charity event for the Totara Hospice over 20 years ago. It is no small undertaking for a suburban bridge club and involves many members to make it a success.

The club’s director, scorer, kitchen help and numerous regular and committee members all chip in to make this happen, right to the final clean up. The annual bridge event is in the form of a relaxed 18 board session with an incredible number of raffles and silent auctions.

This year, there was a full club room with 22 tables and a great atmosphere. Months before the event one of the club’s life members, Mary Wood, goes out cap in hand to literally hundreds of local Howick/Pakuranga retail outlets, restaurants, commercial premises, theatres, supermarkets and gathers donations in kind to be sold at silent auctions on the day. Members provide a plate for the lunch and raffles are sold. Mary says she has been going out each year for over 21 years! In that time Howick Bridge Club has raised over $100,000 for the Totara Hospice.

Congratulations, Mary, and to all at Howick who have made this happen each year.
