Honouring our volunteers in National Volunteer Week

Dealing for Bridge.

National Volunteer Week 18-24 June 2023 honours the collective energies and mana of all volunteers in Aotearoa.

Bridge clubs function because of the huge number of people who give time in many ways.  We sit to play our hands and seldom think of the hours that someone has spent dealing the cards.

Christchurch Club has over 150 volunteers who donate time to ensure the smooth running of the club and bridge sessions.

One volunteer worth special mention is 92-year-old Charles Lapthorne who has dealt the cards for well over 30 years.  He turns up every week to take his turn at dealing.  He is highly reliable and, on his watch, there are no mistakes.

·       Thanks to all those who deal the cards, to ensure we have smooth play.

·       Thanks to those who do maintenance and garden at our clubs.

·       Thanks to those in the mainly smaller clubs, who make and donate food for tournaments and special events.

·       Thanks to the many players who work unpaid, manning the bar, doing admin, managing and providing guidance.

·       And thanks to those experienced players who mentor and help those who wish to improve their bridge skills.
